I got this idea from someone who posted to my open question on FB about Easter traditions and celebrations… This poster said that if you place a marshmallow inside a raw dinner roll, the rolls would come out of the oven hollow. We will see how the boys feel about this excercise next year knowing the result, but they were totally in to it this year!
I bought frozen Rhoades dinner rolls, and let them thaw in the fridge over night. Then we just wrapped each piece of dough around a large marshmallow and placed it in cupcake pan. We did let the dough rise, covered in plastic, for an hour or so… then baked them for 15min at 350.
They came out hollow, AND delicious. The marshmallows made the rolls very sweet having melted down into them. We pointed to how sweet Jesus sacrifice AND resurrection is! They really were SO good, and both boys thought it was super cool that the rolls were hollow, just like the tomb where Jesus had been buried!

We loved these this year, too! We did them a little differently, not sure how this would work compared to what you did, but just wanted to pass on the other options.
Those rolls were delicious, though!
A recipe I read said to use crescent rolls. I just made dinner rolls from scratch (because I’d rather bake than go to the store) and rolled the dough out to squares to wrap with. We took a large marshmallow, which represented Jesus, dipped it in butter like the oil they’d put on a body, rolled it in cinnamon and sugar like the spices they’d put on a body, and then wrapped it in the dough which was the tomb. The tombs that didn’t have good guards and sealed stones at the door tended to leak, though, and I ended up with a little roasted marshmallow at the bottom of the oven

I love that Rachel! I think we will try that next year. This was a last minute idea, that I heard about here and there and kind of made up on my own. I really like the idea using the “oil” and “spices”! Thanks for sharing!!
